"We're pleased to offer departing passengers freshly baked goods and other delights as they leave the country,"Haf Studio was in charge of developing the interiors of both cafes, but the studio has in recent years led the design of many restaurants and food halls in Iceland."We are seeing growing passenger numbers and acknowledge how crucial it is to cater to varied preferences within the airport and offer good food selection both in the departures and arrivals halls. BIM stands for Building Information Modelling, and it involves the design work being carried out in a detailed 3D model of the building being constructed. This way, the likelihood of errors can be greatly reduced.The 3D model is used frequently during construction, and the building is scanned regularly, allowing the actual situation to be compared with the model. This way, it is possible to ensure that everything is in the right place and to make the necessary adjustments as quickly as possible. It can also happen that during construction, a better way to solve a certain problem becomes apparent, and the 3D model is then changed accordingly.The result is that the construction proceeds more efficiently, the number of errors is reduced, and when the work is completed, there is a 3D model of the building as it really is, which can be used in its future operation. Isavia has achieved great success in this field, and the company's experts are repeatedly approached by other companies or institutions to learn about this technology and approach.Jóhannes Bjarni Bjarnason, Department Manager at Isavia, says the technology is very exciting. Developing and operating infrastructure at an international airport is a challenging task that relies on talented and ambitious staff who utilise the latest developments and technical solutions available in civil engineering.

“Keflavík Airport is constantly developing, and it can be said that every year, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country is underway there. We are investing 10-12 billion a year in its development. The aim is to increase the quality so that airport guests can enjoy the service and experience in the best possible way,” says Maren Lind Másdóttir, Chief Airport Development and Infrastructure Officer at Keflavík Airport. An interview with her was published in the special issue of Viðskiptablaðið about the Verk og vit conference.Maren says that the development and operation of infrastructure at an international airport is a challenging task that relies on talented and ambitious staff who utilize the latest developments and technical solutions in civil engineering.“The constant and extensive construction at an international airport creates challenges that are rarely found elsewhere. It’s one thing to design and build a 25,000 square meter building, but it’s quite another to do it at an operating airport, where you have to take into account the operation of the airport, air traffic and flight safety during everything. We are also building and upgrading existing structures, which is also a challenge, because you have to make sure that everything fits together when it’s finished,” she says. Maren says it’s best to meet challenges like this as early in the process as possible. “When we plan projects, we look at their overall timeline but also their interaction with and impact on other projects or the maintenance and operation of the airport.” She also points out that the airport has a community of operators and other stakeholders who can be affected by the construction and will use its results. "It is important that they are well informed throughout the process and can provide their suggestions. We work on this according to the so-called ORAT methodology (Operational Readiness, Activation & Transition), and the main goal is to ensure that when the implementation is complete, processes are up to date and staff are ready to operate in accordance with expectations," says Maren.

3D technology increases construction qualityNew technological solutions also play a major role in the development of KEF. "Since 2015, for example, we have placed great emphasis on adopting the best technological solutions in 3D design. The BIM methodology (Building Information Modeling) is important in our design and construction work. It is based on the principle that project information is compatible and accessible to everyone. When 3D tools are used correctly by talented people, they can not only save time and money, but also significantly improve the quality of the design and the construction itself." Construction areas are regularly photographed with a 3D scanner, and the images are compared with the 3D design. “This way, you can catch collisions, for example, if two pipes collide, much earlier and prevent mistakes,” says Maren, adding: “The development has been so fast that now we just scan a space as we walk through it. We have joked that we are really like a Google Maps car driving around the work site.”Implementing new solutions is part of the cultureMaren says that there is actually an industry emerging within the construction sector that is all about new methods, technologies and systems. “It is part of our culture to adopt everything that can contribute to even better results,” she says. "There was great foresight on the part of those who decided in 2015 to focus on 3D technology. We have also been pioneers in implementing ORAT in Iceland and other innovations. As a result, we as a company now have such a wealth of knowledge and experience in this field that institutions and companies that want to adopt new methods and technological solutions come to us. Of course, we always welcome such requests, as those of us who work in this industry in Iceland must share our knowledge and experience – we all benefit from it."A unique workplace“The most enjoyable part of this job is working with people who have excellent knowledge in their field and know how to use it. There is no other workplace that offers such a diverse and fun range of projects in the field of design, construction and operation of structures – we are lucky to work here,” says Maren, who has worked at Keflavík Airport since 2012. The projects at the international airport are incredibly diverse, not only new construction or expansion of existing ones, but also everything related to the operation and maintenance of the airport’s infrastructure. “The large projects always get the most space in the media, but we are constantly working on taxiways for the aircraft, aircraft stands, baggage sorting systems, service solutions and so on – not to mention maintenance, which is a lot and extremely important, as you can understand.”

This connecting building is supposed to connect the north and south buildings. We're dividing it into two phases. The first phase is what we're planning to start this year, 2026, and we're aiming to finish in 2031.

It is intended to create a large and bright space that will become the heart of the terminal.“Both that there is more space on our sides, which will definitely be in this connecting building. But also that there is some entertainment available and that passengers can access shops and restaurants within short distances,” says Maren.The long corridor between the south and north buildings will also disappear. “This long corridor will become very short. It will not all be included in this first phase of this project, but most of it will be.”

The connecting building will be almost 27 thousand square meters in size, which is similar to the Harpa concert hall at Reykjavík Harbour. Its floor area will be about 9,500 square meters, which is slightly smaller than the Egilshöll football stadium.The building will be 134 meters long. That is similar to the distance from the Keflavík Airport terminal to the long-term parking lots. All of this is being done with the aim of improving the flow and increasing the comfort of airport guests as well as those working at the airport.The area in question is one of the oldest unchanged areas in the terminal. It has changed little in decades, but the airport's ever-expanding activities now call for changes. Emphasis is placed on ensuring that the construction has as little impact on guests and airport operations as possible, although temporary disruption is to some extent inevitable.While construction is underway to improve the facilities for car rental companies, their counters will be moved to temporary facilities just outside the terminal. Construction is expected to be completed in the spring when the new counters will be put into use. At the same time, the number of car rental companies with facilities inside the terminal will increase from three to four.Other projects are also scheduled for completion in the spring.

Construction has been ongoing at Keflavík Airport for the past few years, and at the start of the year, everything was in full swing for the planned opening of the second floor of the East wing, the largest expansion of the airport since its inception.The new wing ORAT testedIn February, before the opening of the second floor of the East wing, so-called ORAT test runs were carried out on the apron next to the building and shortly afterwards on the gangways and bus gates. This is a special flow and reaction test of processes. The tests aimed to ensure that all processes and equipment were ready for the opening of the east wing. On the apron, this included testing guidance equipment and connections to gangways and ground anchors, as well as work processes for refuelling, loading and unloading baggage, and the use of stairs and passenger vehicles in the area.

A bridge between the old and the newA pedestrian bridge was built between the north building of the airport terminal and the new east wing in February. The fourth floor of the east wing will house office space for Isavia employees and other companies at the airport. When the space is put into use, the pedestrian bridge will connect the floor with the existing office space in the north building.The East wing officially openedOn March 21, the east wing was officially opened, after the first passengers had previously passed through it. It was Daði Már Kristófersson, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, who opened the wing. The new extension expands the airport terminal by 30% and significantly improves space and facilities. This is the first phase of a so-called ring connection, which aims to improve both safety and flow at the airport in line with the growing activity at the airport. Until now, the road in front of the terminal building has ended at the arrivals area, where you drive in and out of the P2 parking lot, but the new road runs from there and northeast to the main road, Reykjanesbraut. This change can reduce traffic closest to the terminal and prevent vehicles from crossing lanes. All service traffic, such as traffic due to the construction and transportation of supplies, will then be carried out via another approach to the terminal. The opening marks the completion of the first phase of construction on the ring road, which has been underway since spring 2025.

Shopping and diningVarious changes took place in the shopping and dining sector during the year. In the spring of 2025, two new stores opened at Keflavík Airport: Point and the Icelandic Deli delicatessen. Icelandic Deli offers a selection of Icelandic artisan cheeses, smoked and dried meats, high-quality chocolate, Icelandic spices and Icelandic wine. Point is a food outlet offering a wide range of travel products, snacks, drinks, fresh baked goods, pizzas and other delicacies. Point vending machines can now also be found throughout the terminal, where airport guests can quickly and safely grab all the essentials from Point stores. The vending machines have been a great success, as many passengers are in a hurry to get through the airport, and it can therefore be a relief for people to be able to grab a bite quickly and safely. There is also a Point store in the airport's arrivals hall, which is useful for both travellers and others passing through the airport. A new operator, Heinemann, then took over the operation of the duty-free shops. Changes have been made to the shops, but further changes are planned, with passenger comfort in mind. Aðalstræti changed during the year. It now houses the Trattoria Travolare and Yuzu, as well as a new drinking spot that offers alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. In the last months of the year, the Maikai restaurant reopened at the airport in the same location as Bakað. Maikai previously operated in the terminal in 2022–2023 in a so-called pop-up space and has now reopened, with a more diverse menu than before.The outdoor brand 66°Norður and Rammagerðin, a gift shop, are in place at the airport, and have also opened new shops during the year, in the terminal. They are located at Gate C.

Specialists from Isavia recently presented the ORAT approach at the annual Advent seminar of the New National Hospital(NLSH). This was the second time Isavia has had the opportunity to introduce ORAT to the New National Hospital.The seminar is a platform for stakeholders to discuss the progress of projects, and this year’s agenda focused on design, construction, equipment, and facilities. At the seminar, experts were hired to give presentations on various topics that could be of value to the projects.Among the speakers were Böðvar Schram and Marta Sigurðardóttir, specialists at Isavia. Their presentation focused on the implementation and use of ORAT, or Operational Readiness, Activation & Transition. This approach has been used by Isavia for the last decade and was implemented with great success during the big development project at KEF Airport. It has been very valuable in large-scale projects.Isavia is honored to share its experience with ORAT and to support other organizations involved in major construction projects. Ever since its original implementation at Isavia, it has been clear to us that the approach could benefit more people, and through continued knowledge sharing and collaboration, it is evident that the ORAT methodology can bring significant benefits to Icelandic society.

How does this work? Do you just pick up the phone and say “Hey, we’re here in Iceland - would you like to fly here?” You obviously must sell the idea somehow?” asked the host.“This has been developing very well. I started working for Isavia in 2012. Back in 2007 and 2008, we basically had to show where Iceland was on the map, but of course Eyjafjallajökull helped a lot in 2010,” Grétar replied, and continued: “Essentially, this happens by meeting at conferences all around the world two to four times a year. Sometimes we also visit airlines at their headquarters, and there is non-stop communication through emails, phone calls, and meetings.”Grétar said this work is continuous throughout the year. United Airlines is adding destinations, and Delta is increasing flight frequency from Detroit as an example. We’re also seeing SAS and Finnair increasing their capacity by around 30% next year,” said Grétar, while noting that things can change quickly.Further opportunities exist, particularly in North America and Asia. Work is underway to establish direct flights between Iceland and China. Nothing is finalized yet, but the project is under continuous development.Reaching the Same Numbers Takes Time, but Targeted Efforts Deliver ResultsDuring the interview, Grétar noted that Play’s withdrawal at the end of September had a significant impact on flights through KEF, but targeted measures helped minimize those effects. He said that as soon as the news broke that Play had ceased operations, work began immediately to address the situation.Play had transported around 900,000 passengers through Keflavík International Airport in 2025 before ceasing operations, while KEF’s passenger forecast for 2026 anticipates an overall passenger decrease of 600,000 year-on-year. Grétar said it would take some time to reach the former passenger numbers.“At Isavia, we have been doing extensive marketing, and we work very closely with all airlines. Our role is to attract new airlines, new destinations, and more passengers. That work has been very successful,” said Grétar, adding that according to next year’s forecast, other airlines are growing and have already begun to fill the gap left by Play, which is very positive.“There are certain short-term effects, of course. We base our work on a long-term forecast, but other factors also come into play. For example, Icelandair is not expanding its fleet in the coming years, which has a huge impact, as it is our most important customer,” said Grétar. He expects passenger numbers to return to the same level as in 2024 by 2027–2028. “Based on the growth we’re seeing today. But things can change very quickly.”It is clear from Grétar’s comments that he has confidence in the process and believes Isavia is well prepared to meet increased demand in the near future: “There is definitely still capacity at the airport - there is still room at certain times of the day, for new airlines or for existing ones to expand.”

There, guests can purchase both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in a comfortable setting before heading to their flight. The area has undergone significant changes in recent months, and in Aðalstræti you can now also find the restaurants Trattoria Travolare and Yuzu.The popular outdoor clothing brand 66°North and the gift store Rammagerðin have opened their third outlet in the terminal, now by the C-gates on the second floor of the airport. Particular emphasis is placed on sale items and specially selected products, and Rammagerðin also sells clothing from the menswear store Kormákur & Skjöldur. Travellers can therefore now find great deals on high-quality Icelandic clothing and Icelandic design before leaving the country.The retail chain Point has expanded its presence in the terminal and has opened a store in the arrivals hall of the airport. The ongoing developments focus, among other things, on improving conditions for pedestrians—especially between different areas around the terminal building.A snow-melting system has been installed beneath the walkways in the area, which will make life easier for passengers, staff, and others on snowy days.In addition, all main pedestrian routes in the area are being covered. The new playground is inspired by the whimsical world of Tulipop and will hopefully make the airport a more fun and engaging place its youngest visitors. The new playground will be located near Aðalstræti, the newly constructed restaurant area at the entrance to the second floor of the airport’s new east wing. In the same area, visitors will also find interactive play equipment, including the iWallby Finnish company CSE Entertainment.The playground is a collaboration between Tulipop, the design team ÞYKJÓ, and IRMA design studio. While Tulipop’s enchanting Adventure World is familiar to many in Iceland, the company itself was founded in 2010 by designers Signý Kolbeinsdóttir and Helga Árnadóttir. The brand is known for its vibrant, magical universe filled with playful and quirky characters. Its most ambitious project to date is a 52-episode animated series, which has enjoyed significant popularity.Installation of the playground will take several days and is expected to open later this month.

Construction work on the East Wing (Austurálma) of Keflavík Airport is progressing well, and once it becomes operational, four new passenger boarding bridges will be added, along with two ground-level bus gates.

The ground and concrete work for the new aprons near the two towers was a major project. The aprons are about 20,000 square meters in total — roughly the size of three football fields. It took longer than expected to pour the concrete because the weather did not cooperate with us this summer, just as it did not for other Icelanders. The total amount of concrete used for the East Wing building and the aircraft stands amounted to around 20,000 cubic meters, and 2,300 tons of steel were used for the project.The expansion of Keflavík Airport is based on long-term projections of passenger numbers and the needs of society. The East Wing is a key element in the airport’s future development. Once completed, it will be larger than the original terminal building that was opened in 1987. It will include a new baggage sorting system and a larger dining and waiting area, in addition to the new boarding bridges. This coming autumn, two new boarding bridges and a new restaurant area will be opened, significantly increasing space and comfort for passengers on their way to flights.To get a sense of the actual scale, keep in mind that the East Wing is 124.5 meters long — about the same as Bankastræti street in Reykjavík — 66 meters wide, similar to a football field, and 31 meters high. For comparison, Akureyrarkirkja (the church in Akureyri) is 26 meters tall.

New vending machines, a new food venue offering pastries, pizza and other snacks and a delicatessen are among the additions introduced at Keflavík Airport ahead of the 2025 travel season.

This spring, two new stores opened at Keflavík Airport — <a href="https://www.kefairport.com/restaurants/point" target="_self">Point</a> and <a href="https://www.kefairport.com/shopping/icelandic-deli" target="_self">Icelandic Deli</a> gourmet shop. These stores are a welcome addition to the excellent selection of food and beverage options now available in the terminal, where airport guests can purchase meals, travel essentials, and Icelandic gourmet products.

<a href="https://www.kefairport.com/restaurants/point" target="_self">Point</a> is a new food venue offering a wide range of travel essentials, snacks, beverages, fresh pastries, pizzas, and other treats. Around the terminal, guests will also find Point-branded vending machines, where they can quickly and conveniently grab many of the same items available in the store. The vending machines have been very successfull, as many travelers are in a hurry and appreciate the ease of picking up a quick bite on the go.

Some of the country's largest media outlets visited the new East Wing on Wednesday, February 26, when the first passengers at Keflavík Airport passed through the new section. The passengers went through the wing via two new bus gates. The new East Wing expands the terminal by 30%.

Just under 8.4 million passengers are expected to travel through Keflavík Airport (KEF) in 2025, according to the airport's passenger forecast for the year. A 0.8% year-on-year increase in passengers is anticipated. The forecast predicts a 3% increase in foreign tourists compared to the previous year, reaching just over 2.32 million.

In 2024, just under 8.3 million passengers traveled through the airport, so the forecast predicts a 0.8% increase from year to year. A 3% rise in the number of foreign visitors is expected, with their numbers reaching over 2.32 million—around 9,000 more than the previous record year, 2018.Keflavík Airport's (KEF) 2025 passenger forecast projects that 8.37 million passengers will pass through the airport. Only twice have the numbers been higher: 8.76 million in 2017 and 9.80 million in 2018. With nearly 8.30 million in 2024, this means a projected increase of 0.8% year-on-year. When looking at individual months, the greatest increase in passenger numbers is expected in April (16.7%) and May (7.1%).

During the summer months, 26 airlines will operate scheduled flights to 92 destinations, while 21 airlines will fly to 70 destinations during the winter months. It is estimated that connecting/transit passengers will account for about 30% of the total number of passengers, which is similar to 2024. Connecting passengers are those who use KEF as a transfer hub without staying in Iceland.Alongside the passenger forecast, projections were also made for the number of foreign tourists expected to come to Iceland in 2025, as well as the number of Icelanders traveling abroad.

According to the forecast, just over 2.32 million foreign tourists will arrive in Iceland via KEF in 2025. That is nearly 9,000 more than the record year of 2018, pointing toward a new record year for international arrivals. In the past year, there were about 2.26 million foreign tourists, so a 3.0% year-on-year increase is expected. The greatest increases are projected for April (16.6%), May (10.8%), and June (6.1%).Travel by Icelanders abroad is expected to increase by 1% year-on-year. The forecast estimates that around 612,000 Icelandic residents will travel abroad, which corresponds to an average of 1.6 international trips per person in the year.

"We need to elevate the quality level at the airport, and one of the reasons for this is to ensure that the hub functions effectively," said Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, Director of Business and Development at Keflavík Airport, in a recent interview on Bítið, Bylgjan's morning show. He emphasized that the nature of airports is to develop and grow, and Keflavík Airport must participate in that evolution.

Guðmundur Daði highlighted the importance of ensuring high-quality standards at the airport. "It needs to be easy and comfortable. That is the strength of Keflavík Airport. That’s why we are opening the east wing," he explained. The new wing will feature four new gangways, allowing passengers to walk directly to the plane, and will provide more space for the airport's guests. He stressed the need to continue this journey: "If there isn’t enough space, you’ll be bused to the plane, and over time, customers may not view Keflavík favorably as a connecting hub."The Hub is Essential for IcelandWhen discussing the development of Keflavík Airport, Guðmundur Daði emphasized the importance of focusing on the quality of service rather than just the volume of traffic or the number of passengers the airport can accommodate. "Our ambition is to create a quality hub that provides our island nation with many essential benefits. Keflavík Airport staff took an active role in the annual Job Fair in Suðurnes, presenting exciting career opportunities to young people, including students from the upper levels of elementary school and from Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurnesja. This year, nineteen airport employees participated, offering insights into a wide range of positions available at the airport. The opportunities covered various fields, such as security, aviation, engineering, human resources, passenger transport, and more.Each department brought along the equipment and tools used in their respective roles, allowing students to gain hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of what a typical workday entails. KEF is always on the lookout for lalented individuals to join our team and it is a pleasure to introduce young people to the many career opportunities available at the airport.Over 100 different careers were introduced to the students, who came from 8th and 10th grades of elementary schools in Suðurnes, as well as young people from Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurnesja. On April 24th, a group of young students from Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurnesja visited the airport to explore the various career opportunities it offers. During their visit, they gained valuable insights into a range of roles available at the airport, such as parking management, customer service, and security. The students had the opportunity to tour the terminal, observe different job functions, and learn about the airport's ongoing development and construction projects. It was clear that both the students and teachers in attendance were happy with the visit and left with a deeper understanding of working at KEF and the opportunities available here.Significant large-scale projects are currently underway at the airport. These developments will not only accommodate a greater number of passengers but will also enhance the overall passenger experience, from arrival to departure. Since the construction is not yet completed and comprehensive testing with aircraft is difficult to carry out, a desktop exercise is a good tool to identify previously unknown issues that need to be addressed and to go through procedures with end users.Many stakeholders, both internal and external, are involved in a project like this, and all of them need to come together to review the operations that will take place on the apron. Representatives from safety management, the control tower, the operations center, the construction department, airport services, passenger services, designers, Airport Associates, and Icelandair participated.Tests like these are part of the ORAT process, which is an effective method for supporting the successful implementation of new airport facilities and infrastructure. By organizing testing before opening new infrastructure, we ensure not only that the facility itself is ready, but also that people, processes, systems, and the facility work together seamlessly.The desktop exercise was very successful and provided important information that will benefit us in the preparations for the opening of the apron — and even after the opening.

As mentioned before, a new restaurant area will open in the spring and this autumn the entire second floor of the wing will be open with four new gangways and a new bus gate. Thirty university students from the University of Iceland visited Keflavík Airport last month to learn about the various jobs involved in expanding the Keflavík Airport.

Isavia, which is responsible for the operation and development of Keflavík Airport, and the British construction and consulting company Mace hosted the visit. The university students were particularly interested in the diverse jobs available at the airport.During the visit, the students visited, among other places, the workplaces of Isavia and Mace at Keflavík Airport, and at the end of the visit, Brynjar Vatnsdal and Jóhannes Bjarni Bjarnason, department managers at Isavia, presented the operation and all the opportunities the jobs have to offer.

When it comes to the airport development project a specific sustainability framework has been set, including measurable goals, ways to reach them, and defines the parties responsible for each goal.

Social value is an integral part of the sustainability framework and emphasizes systemic work with the local community, e.g. through the exchange of knowledge and experience. The focus has been on increasing social value through collaboration with institutions in the local community, promotion of jobs and Isavia as a workplace and the dissemination of knowledge generated within the company.This year multiple projects were undertaken to reach these goals. Among these undertakings were multiple workshops on career development and sustainability at Keflavík Airport, visits of our diverse group of experts working on the major development plan of the airport to schools, educational institutions and vocational rehabilitation centers, with time and money being donated and volunteered towards charities.

Active Dialogue With the Local CommunityThis year saw the organization of multiple successful workshops, or so-called employers‘ forums, around career development and sustainability at KEF airport.The workshops are intended to continue the conversation about how Isavia and Keflavík Airport as a workplace can meet the needs of people in the local community. Representatives from Ístak, Kadeco, Miðstöð Símenntunar á Suðurnesjum (MSS), Keilir, Fjölbrautskóli Suðurnesja (FSS), Samtök iðnaðarins, Reykjanesbæ, Suðurnesjabæ, Vinnumálastofnun, Virk and the Electrical Industry Association attended the workshop.After one of these workshops in April, it was decided to establish a working group that can meet more often and come up with proposals on how to meet the challenges of the future, such as tackling unemployment, activating individuals in the local community and providing training and educational opportunities. This group has already started meeting and providing interesting ideas to work on in 2024.Supporting Vocational RehabilitationThis spring, Isavia employees visited MSS and its vocational rehabilitation department. There was a presentation for about thirty people to give them an insight into the work at the airport and in its development. Isavia and Mace's experts reviewed their careers and discussed the decisions that led them to work for Isavia. It was useful to compare different career paths and how different decisions can lead parties into the same workplace. At the end of the session, there was an opportunity to ask questions and get advice from Isavia's experts on jobs, opportunities and careers.The purpose of these visits is to provide an insight into the diverse work being done at Keflavík Airport and in its development. Emphasis is placed on having active dialogue and empowering individuals for employment.Vocational Education For the YouthIsavia regularly visits local educational institutions with presentations or projects that benefit students.Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurnesja, the local junior high school, received a visit from airport staff. The visit aimed to present to the senior class the diverse jobs that are generally available at the airport, as well as to introduce jobs that have been created in connection with the expansion of the terminal. The students welcomed the guests and asked them quite a few questions, which is a sign of their interest in the work that takes place at the airport.Elementary school students in Heiðarskóli also received insights into future jobs at the airport. The 4th grade students participated in in a fun and creative session that addressed the airport community, its working environment and future developments. Isavia tasked the students with assisting its experts in designing an education center for the airport. It is safe to say that there was no shortage of ideas. Using reusable materials collected before the session, the students built their education centers, resulting in fun and original models that will undoubtedly inspire Isavia in its future developments. Students in the 9th and 10th grade then received a visit from Isavia where future jobs at the airport were introduced, and stereotypes on working at airports and in construction were challenged.It is extremely valuable for Isavia and the airport community that staff give their time and energy to a project like this. It is important that the residents of the Suðurnes region, as well as potential future workers, are informed about what is happening at the airport and how it affects the whole community.Staff Volunteering ProjectsStaff have had the opportunity to support charities. Nine employees spent half a day with the environmental protection organization Blái herinn to clean up beaches around Garðskagi in Suðurnes. In total around 160kg of trash was collected or about 18kg of trash collected by each staff member.Six employees donated their time and work to the Red Cross in Keflavík, where they assisted going through donated clothing items and assisting customers in their store. The Red Cross is dedicated to work with refugees and in 2024 there are plans to assist better in these areas.Coming Up in 2024Work has already commenced on a Social Value project calendar for next year. Planned already are projects with additional elementary schools and with new partners. Much can be learned from the many projects undertaken in 2023 and in discussion with the working group we can accept tips and ideas to better the project this year.

Some of the most exciting milestones from 2023 at Keflavík Airport include a new taxiway, opening of a new baggage hall and new borders which improve arrivals from the Schengen area.

Mike TaxiwayIn July 2023, a new runway was officially put into use at Keflavík Airport. The taxiway, which has been named Mike, connects the terminal's apron and runway. Mike is Isavia's first addition to the runway system, as all other additions were built by NATO or the US military.The new taxiway is intended to increase the safety of the runway system by improving the flow of arrivals and departures. This means that airplanes will get off and onto runways earlier, increasing the capacity of the runway system and speeding up aircraft handling. The taxiway will decrease the waiting time for planes to get off the runway or take off during peak hours, and as a result, reduce the carbon footprint of planes on the ground, which is one of the airport‘s goals.The East Wing Begins to Take ShapeA new and more spacious baggage hall was opened for passengers who landed at Keflavík Airport. This renovation is the first segment of the new east wing of the terminal, geared towards enhancing passenger facilities and overall experience.Situated on the ground floor of a fresh extension to the terminal, the baggage hall represents the new east wing's initial phase. It features three expansive and broad baggage claim belts, with provision for adding two more in the future. Concurrently, the old baggage hall's conveyor belts will be dismantled to pave the way for an upgraded duty-free shopping area for incoming passengers.

New Improved BordersA new<a href="https://www.kefplus.is/en/news/a-new-arrivals-border-hall"> </a>arrival border for passengers coming in Iceland from countries outside the Schengen area was opened in June, in a temporary reusable extension. The new border will facilitate and improve the handling of passengers entering the area in accordance with new European regulations.With the opening of the new border, passenger flow in the terminal improved considerably, and efforts have been made to avoid long queues at border control and shorten waiting times with increased efficiency, e.g. with self-service machines.The building that was built for the new border will be used until a new and permanent facility for the Schengen external border can be established in a new connecting building that is currently being designed. In accordance with the emphasis on reuse during the development of Keflavík Airport, the building is designed in such a way that it can be taken down and used for other purposes when its role in border control ends.Reviewed Masterplan for KEF AirportIsavia has updated its Masterplan for Keflavik International Airport, which marks the first update since the original development plan was published. The Masterplan is reviewed and updated every five years to keep in line with changing circumstances and developments.Valid until 2045, the current Masterplan remains largely based on the previous development plan covering 2015 to 2040.Here you can study the development plan of Keflavík Airport in its entiretyThe East Wing - Our Largest ProjectThe East Wing is the largest project in Isavia's history, according to Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, Director of Business and Development at Isavia.At the east wing, a stairwell is being poured for the expected gangway. Guðmundur Daði says that from each stairwell there will be two fingers out into two planes. By doing so, it is possible to extend the walkway to the airplanes and thus start check-in earlier and ensure a more even flow of passengers. Check-in is traditionally the biggest bottleneck at airports, so the stairwells increase efficiency. Then it will be possible to have either two normal planes or one wide-body jet at the stairwells, which is also an improvement.Environmental mattersLevel 3+ achieved in the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation Keflavík International Airport's policy on climate issues, and measures to reduce the airport's carbon footprint as a whole, have received the fourth (Level 3+) of the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation.The Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) assesses whether airports are measuring carbon emissions correctly and also evaluates the effectiveness of measures intended to reduce their carbon footprint. The goal is to reduce the environmental impact of airports by measuring, managing and reducing carbon emissions.Isavia’s goal is for Keflavík International Airport to have net zero operation by 2030. This goal will be achieved through collaboration with stakeholders, active monitoring of environmental factors, energy transition, and with certified carbon offsets as needed.Isavia Attends Sustainability DiscussionsHrönn Ingólfsdóttir, director of strategy and sustainability at Isavia, and Stefán Kári Sveinbjörnsson, project manager at Isavia, gave a talk at the Sustainable Suðurnes meeting hosted by the Suðurnes Forum in May 2023. Hrönn and Stefán Kári discussed, among other things, the company's sustainability journey and goals for carbon neutrality in Isavia's operations that are to be achieved until the end of 2030. A new mapping of Keflavík Airport's carbon footprint was presented, technical challenges for different new aircraft fuels due to the energy exchange in flight at Keflavík Airport, as well as the energy demand of international flights, which is estimated to be the equivalent of at least 14.7 – 16.5 Svartsengi power plants in 2050.Among the guests at the meeting were Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate, who gave a speech on the path to success in climate matters.Environmental Impact Assessment Report Presented for Public ReviewIn April 2023, Isavia organised an open meeting in Reykjanesbær on its environmental impact assessment report on the upcoming development of KEF Airport. In addition to the report, the plans for construction at KEF Airport for the next ten years and the goals they are intended to achieve were presented.The projects that Isavia is planning at Keflavík Airport in the coming years aim to improve infrastructure and facilities, so that the airport can guarantee better service and passenger experience. The plans include, among other things, a significant expansion of the terminal buildings, the construction of a parking garage, improved access to the airport, a new area for air cargo and improvements that will increase the efficiency of the existing two runways. The construction is so that Keflavík Airport can comfortably accommodate the number of passengers that have passed through the airport at the peak and to meet the increase in passengers that is expected to occur in the next ten years. Isavia encourages everyone to familiarize themselves with the plans for the construction and development of Keflavík Airport and the assessment of their environmental impact. We have an action plan that covers the years 2022 to 2026, and in addition we have defined goals and actions until 2030," said Egill."It is a system that is known worldwide and makes various requirements regarding material selection, pollution, waste issues, resource utilization and more. We intend to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification, which is a lofty goal for this type of building. We have experienced consultants to help us achieve this goal, as it is necessary to meet the strict requirements," says Egill Björn.

Environmental Assessment Report PresentedAn environmental assessment report on the expansion of Keflavík Airport was published for comments on the Planning Agency's website.The report was prepared at the initiative of Isavia and deals with the assessment of the environmental impact of the projects that the company is planning at Keflavík Airport in the coming years.The construction works are intended to strengthen the infrastructure of the runway system, expand the terminal and improve facilities so that the airport can guarantee a better service and passenger experience.The report assesses the potential environmental impact of Isavia’s development plans, which aim to improve Keflavík Airport’s infrastructure to accommodate current and future passenger growth in the next decade. The project includes the expansion of the terminal, strengthening of the runway system, and upgrades to enhance passenger experience. Isavia’s construction will adhere to their sustainability policy and will be certified by the BREEAM, the international certification system for sustainable construction. Isavia believes that implementing sustainability measures will help to reduce costs over the lifetime of the buildings while minimizing their environmental impact.A Number of New Restaurants and ShopsMultiple new stores and restaurants opened at Keflavík Airport in 2023. The famous Jómfrúin, a well known restaurant to many nationals, opened at KEF Airport in 2023. The restaurant offers Danish spreads and other delicacies. Another popular opening in 2023 were the restaurants Baked and Elda started operating, both of them offer meals that are extremely suitable for travelers. Bakað was designed by HAF Studio and is located both in the departure and the arrival hall of the airport. At the Elda restaurant, special emphasis is placed on quality and good ingredients, and the restaurant is owned by SSP, an international company that specializes in the operation of restaurants at airports and operates over 2,500 locations worldwide.Finally, Bæjarins Beztu, the famous hot dog stand, opened their third pop-up stall at Keflavík Airport towards the end of 2023 – now in the airport's departure hall by the passport control. The company has operated a branch in store 10-11 in the airport's arrivals hall since 2021, and this summer added a hot dog cart in the waiting area in the south building through which passengers on their way to Great Britain, the United States and other non-Schengen countries pass.

New Eyewear Store and Elko ExpandsIn the first months of 2024, a new and elegant eyewear store Eyesland was opened at Keflavík Airport, offering many of the most desirable brands of glasses and sunglasses. The new store was designed by Gláma Kím and is located next to the exit from the Duty Free in the departure hall.In November 2023, the electronics chain ELKO opened a new store located in the arrivals hall of Keflavík Airport with better access and an increased product range. The store is located in the airport's new baggage hall, at the exit from the Duty Free Store.

The forecast predicts that nearly 2.4 million foreign tourists will arrive in Iceland through the airport. If the projection holds, 2024 will mark the third-largest year in KEF's history, and the highest number of foreign tourists arriving in Iceland."We look forward to welcoming more guests next year. Our recent investments in airport development have started to yield results, offering improved facilities for passengers and staff," says Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, Director of Business and Development at Isavia. "The forecast also indicates that there will be a more proportionate increase in the number of passengers, including foreign tourists visiting Iceland, during the winter months as compared to the summer months. The 2024 KEF Passenger Forecast anticipates 8.49 million passengers travelling through KEF, representing a 9.6% increase from the 7.74 million travellers in the current year. Only twice before have passenger numbers exceeded this level: 8.8 million in 2017 and 9.8 million in 2018. During the summer months, 25 airlines will operate scheduled flights to 82 destinations, and 20 airlines will serve 69 destinations during the winter months.When considering the months classified as winter months by KEF (January, February, March, November, and December), passenger numbers are expected to grow by 15.2% or 354 thousand. During the summer months (April to October), passenger numbers are projected to increase by 391 thousand, representing a 7.2% year-on-year rise.The forecast projects that transit passengers will account for approximately 30% of the total passenger count next year, compared to around 27% in the current year. This indicates a higher percentage of passengers using KEF as a connecting hub without staying in Iceland. The highest percentage of connecting passengers was observed in 2018 at around 40%.More Increase of Foreign Tourist during the Winter Months

In addition to the passenger forecast, a projection was made for the number of foreign tourists arriving in Iceland through KEF next year. It is expected that nearly 2.38 million foreign tourists will visit Iceland. This is approximately 60 thousand more than in 2018 when 2.32 million tourists arrived, marking the highest number of foreign tourists to date. In 2023 year, approximately 2.21 million tourists visited Iceland, and the forecast therefore expects a 7.3% increase year-on-year. According to the forecast, about 93 thousand more tourists will arrive during the winter months next year, representing a 13.4% year-on-year increase. During the summer months, an additional 68 thousand tourists are expected, reflecting a 4.5% increase.KEF - Constantly Evolving

Departing passengers are those departing from the airport after a stay in Iceland, arriving passengers are those arriving to stay in Iceland, and connecting passengers use KEF as a transit hub, changing to another flight without entering the country. Connecting passengers are counted both on arrival and departure.

The Bæjarins Beztu hot dog stands have garnered immense popularity among airport guests. With the opening of this additional stand in the departure hall, all travelers now have the opportunity to enjoy a hot dog "with everything" before embarking on their journeys."The hot dog stand introduced this summer has been a huge hit, and the branded t-shirts and hoodies have become sought-after items among tourists.
