The corridor used by arriving passengers to leave the baggage reclaim hall has been expanded, upgraded, and slightly relocated. These changes were implemented with the passenger experience in mind, while also addressing the needs of the airport’s growing operations. In conjunction with the work on the customs corridor, the terminal’s entrance area on the arrivals side was expanded, and facilities for car rental agencies and bus companies were relocated. Together, these changes create better flow and provide more space for arriving passengers and others moving through the area.

Earthworks and the installation of new services have begun at aircraft stands in preparation for the installation of a temporary connecting corridor between KEF's North and South buildings.

Earthworks and the installation of new services have begun at aircraft stands 3 & 5 at Keflavík Airport; these stands are located on the western side of the connecting corridor between the terminal’s North and South buildings. New apron areas and infrastructure will be developed, and aircraft servicing facilities will be upgraded. Before construction begins on a new connecting structure, a temporary corridor will be erected between the two buildings. Work is currently being carried out on the surrounding aprons to ensure they can continue to service aircraft and passengers.

20261012_135801.jpg

The objective of the project is to provide the necessary apron facilities during the construction of the new connecting structure. This includes new aircraft stands, passenger boarding bridges, aircraft docking systems, fueling systems, utility infrastructure, and facilities for apron operations. The project increases the terminal's capacity, improves passenger flow and apron operations, and lays the foundation for further development in the area in the future. As part of these changes, stand 1 will be removed. In its place, stand 3 will be expanded into a so-called "MARS" stand—a flexible configuration capable of accommodating either two smaller aircraft or one larger aircraft.Current construction is focused solely on stands 3 & 5, while work on stand 4 is set to begin in the future, with further development continuing over the next few years.

The changes made to the eastern section of the South Building exemplify how development at Keflavík Airport translates into better service for passengers.

The changes made to the eastern section of the South Building exemplify how development at Keflavík Airport translates into better service for passengers. Lessons learned from this project will be applied to improve service and facilities elsewhere in the terminal—including the western section of the South Building.Brynjar Vatnsdal, Head of Development at Isavia, notes that the impact includes providing departing passengers with more space for themselves and their luggage. In the South Building, this means, among other things, that queues will be less obtrusive in the corridor. "It will be easier to find your departure gate. There will be more space. Hopefully, there will be a seat available for you, complete with a power outlet to charge your laptop. In short, it will be exactly how we want gate areas to be. I hope passengers notice the change very quickly."

Today, a tender was published for the renewal of KEF's security screening area.

Today, a tender was published for the renewal of KEF's security screening area. All equipment in the security screening area will be replaced with new equipment, including screening equipment, conveyor systems, and other supporting infrastructure. With this new equipment, security screening will become simpler and more convenient for KEF's guests. The project involves a comprehensive renovation of the security screening area at Keflavík Airport - — the area where airport guests pass through security screening after check-in. This renovation has two main components. On one hand, all security screening equipment will be replaced with the latest technology used at leading European airports, and on the other, the security screening hall will be refurbished with a focus on a brighter, more open environment and improved acoustics.Construction will be carried out in two phases, timed for the periods of the year when airport activity is lowest. The project is expected to be completed in 2028.More information about the project can be found here.[

Construction on the expansion of the South Building has been completed and the 1,900 square meter extension has been put into use. The expansion of the South Building includes improved facilities for passengers at the departure gate on both floors at the eastern end of the South Building.Construction began in January 2024, and with it the number of seats in the waiting area has been significantly increased, new departure gates have been put into use, in addition to expanding the catering and retail space.By the mid-1990s, the capacity of the airport terminal had reached its limit and the increased need for expansion had become apparent. This increased need for expansion was partly due to Iceland's full membership of the Schengen cooperation, which required complete separation of passengers inside and outside the area. A new South Building, south of the old terminal, now commonly known as the North Building, was therefore put into use in 2001.More than a decade later, however, it became clear that there was a need to expand the South Building, and this expansion has proven to be an important part of the development of Keflavík Airport after the large increase in passenger traffic through the airport since 2010, especially on flights to and from North America and the British Isles.

This year, Keflavík Airport participated in DesignMarch for the first time with the exhibition “New connections are gaining ground”, which focused on the importance of innovation and collaboration in developing future solutions.KEF has, in previous years, supported DesignMarch by hosting exhibitions at the airport, but this year the aim was to open a window into the work that takes place at the airport and show how design can have a positive impact on the experience of passengers, staff and partners. For Keflavík Airport, participation in DesignMarch is not only about presenting development projects, but also about strengthening ties with the community through dialogue and creating new connections between different disciplines. The exhibition was open from 7–10 May and many guests came to learn about the upcoming projects, discuss ideas and experience how new connections can become a driving force for positive change. The family workshop "Dream Airport" was also held in collaboration with Þykjó, where children and adults were able to let their imaginations run wild and create an environment for their own future airport. The family workshop was very popular and created a fun athmosphere.Keflavík Airport thanks everyone who visited the exhibition for their attendance, interest and stimulating conversation.About the exhibitionDream Airport – Family Workshop

The first passengers passed through the new annex to the South Building of the airport terminal yesterday, April 15, when the so-called ORAT test of the passenger flow and infrastructure was carried out.ORAT (Operational Readiness, Activation & Transition) is an internationally recognised methodology that aims to ensure that structures, technical systems, processes and human resources are fully ready when new premises or new operations are put into operation. The method emphasises comprehensive project management, a clear division of responsibilities and targeted testing of all key aspects of the project before operations begin. This time, the gates were opened to real passengers and their journey through the new facilities was monitored, but in other trials, airport staff have been recruited to play passengers. The test went very well, and therefore the lower floor should be put into full use in the next couple of days. The upper floor will follow, and is expected to open in the coming weeks, also after testing.Further information about the south building annex can be found here.

Maikai.jpg

Keflavík Airport is in constant development, and various changes have taken place in the retail- food and beverage options in recent months. The aim is to enhance the passenger experience and to provide more exciting options for both departing and arriving passengers.

One of the main changes is the reopening of Maikai in the departures area of the airport, in the same location previously occupied by the restaurant Bakað. Maikai was previously operated in the terminal during 2022–2023 in a so-called pop-up space and has now reopened with a more varied menu. The popular acai bowls that were previously available in the terminal can still be found there, and in addition the venue now offers fresh sandwiches, chia puddings, skyr bowls, wraps, and other healthy and tasty snacks to grab and take along on the journey.

drykkir.jpg

In Aðalstræti, in the airport's east wing, a new beverage venue has opened in the same area where Zócaló was previously located. There, guests can purchase both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in a comfortable setting before heading to their flight. The area has undergone significant changes in recent months, and in Aðalstræti you can now also find the restaurants Trattoria Travolare and Yuzu. The popular outdoor clothing brand 66°North and the gift store Rammagerðin have opened their third outlet in the terminal, now by the C-gates on the second floor of the airport. Particular emphasis is placed on sale items and specially selected products, and Rammagerðin also sells clothing from the menswear store Kormákur & Skjöldur. Travellers can therefore now find great deals on high-quality Icelandic clothing and Icelandic design before leaving the country. The retail chain Point has expanded its presence in the terminal and has opened a store in the arrivals hall of the airport. There, customers can find a variety of travel essentials, souvenirs, sandwiches, pastries, hot dogs, and other light meals. There will also be significantly more seating for customers than before. These changes are part of the ongoing development and renewal at Keflavík Airport. The goal is to enhance services, improve facilities, and offer a more varied selection for the millions of passengers who pass through the airport each year.

Recently, a desktop trial was conducted for a new apron near the east wing of the terminal. The project is closely connected to the east wing project. The new apron will include, among other things, four new aircraft stands and a snow-melting system.Such an exercise is an important step in preparing end users to put the apron into operation. Since the construction is not yet completed and comprehensive testing with aircraft is difficult to carry out, a desktop exercise is a good tool to identify previously unknown issues that need to be addressed and to go through procedures with end users. Many stakeholders, both internal and external, are involved in a project like this, and all of them need to come together to review the operations that will take place on the apron. Representatives from safety management, the control tower, the operations center, the construction department, airport services, passenger services, designers, Airport Associates, and Icelandair participated.Tests like these are part of the ORAT process, which is an effective method for supporting the successful implementation of new airport facilities and infrastructure. By organizing testing before opening new infrastructure, we ensure not only that the facility itself is ready, but also that people, processes, systems, and the facility work together seamlessly. The desktop exercise was very successful and provided important information that will benefit us in the preparations for the opening of the apron — and even after the opening.

Almost 8.5 million passengers are expected to travel through Keflavík Airport (KEF) next year, according to the airport's passenger forecast for 2024.

Almost 8.5 million passengers are expected to travel through Keflavík Airport (KEF) next year, according to the airport's passenger forecast for 2024. The forecast predicts that nearly 2.4 million foreign tourists will arrive in Iceland through the airport. If the projection holds, 2024 will mark the third-largest year in KEF's history, and the highest number of foreign tourists arriving in Iceland."We look forward to welcoming more guests next year. Our recent investments in airport development have started to yield results, offering improved facilities for passengers and staff," says Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, Director of Business and Development at Isavia. "The forecast also indicates that there will be a more proportionate increase in the number of passengers, including foreign tourists visiting Iceland, during the winter months as compared to the summer months. This will contribute to a more balanced and year-round utilization of the airport and Iceland's tourism infrastructure in general."Passenger Growth by 9.6% Year-on-Year

2024Forecast.png

The 2024 KEF Passenger Forecast anticipates 8.49 million passengers travelling through KEF, representing a 9.6% increase from the 7.74 million travellers in the current year. Only twice before have passenger numbers exceeded this level: 8.8 million in 2017 and 9.8 million in 2018. During the summer months, 25 airlines will operate scheduled flights to 82 destinations, and 20 airlines will serve 69 destinations during the winter months. When considering the months classified as winter months by KEF (January, February, March, November, and December), passenger numbers are expected to grow by 15.2% or 354 thousand. During the summer months (April to October), passenger numbers are projected to increase by 391 thousand, representing a 7.2% year-on-year rise. The forecast projects that transit passengers will account for approximately 30% of the total passenger count next year, compared to around 27% in the current year. This indicates a higher percentage of passengers using KEF as a connecting hub without staying in Iceland. The highest percentage of connecting passengers was observed in 2018 at around 40%.More Increase of Foreign Tourist during the Winter Months

2024TouristForecast.png

In addition to the passenger forecast, a projection was made for the number of foreign tourists arriving in Iceland through KEF next year. It is expected that nearly 2.38 million foreign tourists will visit Iceland. This is approximately 60 thousand more than in 2018 when 2.32 million tourists arrived, marking the highest number of foreign tourists to date. In 2023 year, approximately 2.21 million tourists visited Iceland, and the forecast therefore expects a 7.3% increase year-on-year. According to the forecast, about 93 thousand more tourists will arrive during the winter months next year, representing a 13.4% year-on-year increase. During the summer months, an additional 68 thousand tourists are expected, reflecting a 4.5% increase.KEF - Constantly Evolving

komusalur.jpg

KEF Airport is in a state of continuous evolution, with a focus on enhancing airport facilities to provide superior service for customers, and an even better experience for guests. This year, the first phase of the east wing, a new terminal extension, was put into operation, featuring a more spacious baggage hall and a more efficient baggage system. A new taxiway also opened, reducing aircraft waiting times, and improvements to the arrival facilities for non-Schengen passengers were launched."In the second half of 2024, the east wing will be fully operational, with construction commencing in mid-2021. This phase will include new boarding gates, as well as an expanded area for shops and restaurants," says Guðmundur Daði. "These developments will enable us to accommodate the growing number of passengers more effectively and provide better facilities for our employees and business partners. All of this contributes to an enhanced service and experience for passengers, strengthening the airport's competitiveness."About Passenger ForecastsThe 2024 KEF Passenger Forecast is based on an analysis and evaluation of factors influencing passenger demand for flights to and from the airport. The forecast relies on information about handling times secured by airlines, data from KEF Airport's systems, and updates on airline plans.Passenger numbers are categorized into three sections, encompassing departing and arriving passengers, as well as connecting passengers. Departing passengers are those departing from the airport after a stay in Iceland, arriving passengers are those arriving to stay in Iceland, and connecting passengers use KEF as a transit hub, changing to another flight without entering the country. Connecting passengers are counted both on arrival and departure.

The electronics chain ELKO has opened a new store in the arrival hall of Keflavík Airport. The store offers better access and more variety of product range. The store is located in the airport's new baggage hall, at the exit from the Duty Free store.

"We look forward to welcoming tourists to the new and larger area in the arrival hall of Keflavík Airport. Accessibility to the new store is much better than at the previous location, and the store itself is one of our most impressive," says Óttar Örn Sigurbergsson, ELKO's managing director."The new store has a brand-new look but a similar design to our stores in Skeifan and Akureyri. Customers have been asking for an increased product range for a long time, and now we can finally answer the call with more space, better access, and more products. Therefore, it allows us to improve our customer service further."For years, ELKO has operated stores at the airport, one in the airport's departure hall and one in the arrival hall, inside the Duty Free. The airport's new baggage hall, where the store is located, is the first part of the new east wing of the terminal to open and aims to improve passenger facilities and their experience."We have had a successful partnership with ELKO for a number of years, both in the terminal's departure hall and in the Duty Free, and it is, therefore, a pleasure to be able to further improve the passenger experience with a new store and an increased range of products. Keflavík Airport is in constant development, and all development is aimed at improving the passenger experience with services that are suitable for different groups of passengers," says Gunnhildur Erla Vilbergsdóttir, department head of shopping and catering at Keflavík Airport.

Last Wednesday, October 18, the staff of Isavia and the consulting company Mace visited Fjölbrautskóli Suðurnesja, the local junior highschool.

The aim of the visit was to present to the senior class the diverse jobs that are generally available at the airport, as well as to introduce jobs that have been created in connection with the expansion of the terminal. Staff who hold different jobs within Isavia and Mace presented their jobs and experiences, told about their education, hobbies and other things that have influenced their career development. The visit is part of Isavia's and Mace's efforts to have a positive impact on the local community, where employees from the two companies regularly visit local educational institutions with presentations or projects that benefit students. The students welcomed the guests and asked them a quite a few questions, which is a sign of their interest in the work that takes place at the airport. It is extremely valuable for Isavia and the airport community that staff give their time and energy to a project like this. It is important that the residents of the Suðurnes region, as well as potential future workers, are informed about what is happening at the airport and how it affects the whole community.

The East Wing is the largest project in Isavia's history, according to Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, Director of Business and Development at Isavia. A detailed review of the East Wing appeared in Morgunblaðið last Sunday, October 15.

Guðmundur says that the east wing is Isavia's biggest project, whether in terms of funds or square meters. For example, the building is about four thousand square meters larger than the original northern building. The initial cost estimate assumed that the east wing would cost ISK 21.8 billion in current value. Now the final cost is expected to be 22-23 billion. At the east wing, a stairwell is being poured for the expected gangway. Guðmundur Daði says that from each stairwell there will be two fingers out into two planes. By doing so, it is possible to extend the walkway to the airplanes and thus start check-in earlier and ensure a more even flow of passengers. Check-in is traditionally the biggest bottleneck at airports, so the stairwells increase efficiency. Then it will be possible to have either two normal planes or one wide-body jet at the stairwells, which is also an improvement.Guðmundur Daði also draws attention to the fact that construction work worth 3.5 billion ISK is currently underway at the airport. Including building a new fuel system on (see picture at the bottom of the page)."The reason why planes are delayed at Keflavík Airport is often that many engines need to be serviced at once and tankers with fuel need to be driven between them. With the new system, it will be possible to pump fuel directly from the pipes and into the planes," says Guðmundur Daði in the Morgunblaðið article - which can be read here in icelandic.

Passengers landing at Keflavík Airport at noon today were greeted with a newly expanded baggage hall. This renovation is the first segment of the new east wing of the terminal, geared towards enhancing passenger facilities and overall experience.

"The new space boasts higher ceilings, broader walls, and larger, more efficient conveyor belts. These upgrades not only offer passengers a more pleasant space to retrieve their luggage but also aim to reduce wait times," comments Maren Lind Másdóttir, Director of Facilities and Infrastructure at Isavia. "Keflavík Airport is perpetually evolving to boost the passenger experience while simultaneously enhancing its competitive edge. In the upcoming years, we'll continue to make strides in this direction."

Unveiling the First Phase of the East WingSituated on the ground floor of a fresh extension to the terminal, the baggage hall represents the new east wing's initial phase. It features three expansive and broad baggage claim belts, with provision for adding two more in the future. Concurrently, the old baggage hall's conveyor belts will be dismantled to pave the way for an upgraded duty-free shopping area for incoming passengers.

gulurjakki.jpg

The new annexe is comprised of three floors and a basement. Initiated in mid-2021, the construction now includes an efficient baggage handling system based in the building's basement. The completion of this structure is anticipated by the latter half of next year, with plans to introduce a larger dining and waiting area on the second floor and four new boarding bridges. For context, the east wing, is over 20,000 square meters, while in comparison, the Laugardalshöll arena in Reykjavík is about 17,000 square meters. The dimensions of the east wing stand at 124.5 m in length, 66 m in width, and 31 m in height.Sustainability at the ForefrontIn the design, material selection, and technological implementation for the east wing, the focal point was to curtail the carbon footprint, bolster energy efficiency, and elevate operational effectiveness, in line with Isavia's commitment to sustainability. To ensure these standards are met, the east wing will undergo evaluation to achieve the renowned BREEAM certification – a globally recognized benchmark for sustainable construction.

Isavia has issued bonds to US investors in a senior unsecured private placement of 175 million euros. This is equivalent to over ISK 25 billion. This is the first bond issue in the history of Isavia.

The capital will be used to refinance existing loans of the company, and with this bond issue Isavia is securing capital on long-term advantageous terms. The capital will also be used to support further development at Keflavík International Airport. The financing is a one-phase issue concluded in August 2023, with bonds that have a duration of 7-12 years. DNB Markets Inc. acted as a placement agent for the bonds.According to Ingibjörg Arnarsdóttir, Isavia´s Chief Finance Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer (CFO/CHRO), the bond issue provides Isavia with beneficial refinancing. “We are financing the company on considerably better terms than the domestic market allows for - in that way the bond issue strengthens the company substantially in the middle of the extensive and important development that is underway at Keflavík International Airport.” says Ingibjörg. “Investors place great trust in Isavia in this first bond issue in the history of the company. The reception received by investors was extremely good.”

Keflavík International Airport's policy on climate issues, and measures to reduce the airport's carbon footprint as a whole, have received the fourth level (Level 3+) of the Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation.

Thea Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) assesses whether airports are measuring carbon emissions correctly and also evaluates the effectiveness of measures intended to reduce their carbon footprint. The goal is to reduce the environmental impact of airports by measuring, managing and reducing carbon emissions.Isavia’s goal is for Keflavík International Airport to have net zero operation by 2030. This goal will be achieved through collaboration with stakeholders, active monitoring of environmental factors, energy transition, and with certified carbon offsets as needed.Last year, the emphasis was on calculating the carbon footprint of the airport’s value chain as a whole. This refers to emissions from all companies and entities that are not under Isavia's management but belong to the company's supply and value chain. By achieving level four out of six in the ACA accreditation, not only has this calculation been certified by an independent international body, but our emission reduction and offset measures have also been certified.

carbon.png

This achievement is not least due to the cooperation of the members of the airport community at Keflavik Airport. In order to manage the airport's total emissions, a collaborative platform was established for all these parties with the aim of finding ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the airport as a whole.Hrönn Ingólfsdóttir, Director of Corporate Strategy & Sustainability at Isavia:“In accordance with the company’s sustainability policy, Isavia’s guiding principle is to keep the negative environmental impact of its operations to a minimum in harmony and collaboration with stakeholders. This certification that Keflavík International Airport has received today, level four in ACI's Airport Carbon Accreditation, is a confirmation that we are on the right track and shows and proves that we are achieving tangible results in our work to reduce carbon emissions. We are well on our way to achieving our goal of net zero operation in our own operations by 2030."Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE:“I warmly congratulate Keflavik Airport for becoming certified at Level 3+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation. The airport has committed to reach net zero CO2 emissions by 2030 as part of our airport industry commitment which was just reaffirmed last month, and this new certification shows it is making tangible progress towards that goal. Indeed, Keflavik airport does walk the talk - delivering tangible CO2 reductions from emissions under its control and offsetting its residual ones but also engaging with its operational partners so that they reduce their own emissions too. Hats off!”About ACAThe Airport Carbon Accreditation is a project run by the Airports Council International (ACI), and has been recognised by a number of international organisations, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFACCC), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union.

Bakad1.png

A new café called Bakað has opened at Keflavik Airport. The café is located in the airport arrival and departure hall on the 1st floor and accessible to all passengers traveling through the airport.

The new café will offer a selection of delicious pastries, freshly baked bread and pizzas, healthy fresh juices, salads and steaming hot quality coffee from Te & Kaffi. Product selection and opening hours will be limited to begin with."We are focusing on good simple dishes, fresh bread and pizzas, and look forward to offering our baked goods to guests at the airport and sending them happy and full to their flights." says Ágúst Einþórsson, baker and concept designer for Bakað‘s product range. "In addition to offering quick quality service, we have put a lot of ambition into the café´s design for those guests wishing to sit down and enjoy their meal."

bakad2.jpg

Haf Studio was in charge of developing the interiors of both cafes, but the studio has in recent years led the design of many restaurants and food halls in Iceland."Designing an inviting and pleasant area for guests at Keflavik Airport was a fun challenge. To achieve a simple and stylish overall look we chose to use natural oak in combination with warm leather in the seating area with ambient lighting. Our goal was to create an environment where guests feel comfortable and can have an enjoyable time before a flight," says Hafsteinn Júlíusson, owner of HAF Studio. This first Bakað café has now opened in the airport's arrival and departure hall, with the second opening later this year on the second floor of the terminal‘s main building."As the number of passengers continues to grow the need for diverse services increases as well, and Bakað is a great addition to the airport‘s restaurant-flora. We are always working to improve the passenger experience and services offered, and Bakað is a great new option for our passengers," says Gunnhildur Erla Vilbergsdóttir, department head of retail and catering at Isavia.

mike-taxiway.jpg

Today, a new taxiway was officially put into use at Keflavík Airport. The taxiway, which has been named Mike, connects the terminal's apron and runway. The taxiway is Isavia‘s first addition to the runway system, as all other additions were built by NATO and the United States military.

„This addition to Keflavik Airport‘s runway system is a major milestone in the development of the airport and plays a big role in increasing its competitiveness. Keflavik Airport has tough international competitors and we are constantly looking for ways to strengthen the airport‘s operations, improve its facilities for airlines and improve the passenger experience,“ says Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, Isavia‘s Chief Commercial and Airport Development Officer. The new taxiway is intended to increase the safety of the runway system by improving the flow of arrivals and departures. This means that airplanes will get off and onto runways earlier, increasing the capacity of the runway system and speeding up aircraft handling. The taxiway will decrease the waiting time for planes to get off the runway or take off during peak hours, and as a result, reduce the carbon footprint of planes on the ground, which is one of the airport‘s goals. The first plane that followed Mike was a Boeing 737-Max-8 plane from Icelandair that was travelling from Keflavik Airport to Oslo. The taxiway is no small project as it is 1200 meters long and 35 meters wide. For comparison, the amount of asphalt used in the project would be enough to pave 35 football fields. The cost of the taxiway was almost 4 billion ISK.Construction on Mike began in 2022, but was completed in early summer 2023.

In recent weeks a diverse group of Isavia specialists have visited the Suðurnes Centre for Lifelong Learning and Cooperative Vocational Rehabilitation. The purpose of these visits is to provide an insight into the diverse work being done at Keflavík Airport and in its development. Emphasis is placed on having active dialogue and empowering individuals for employment.

This spring, Isavia employees visited MSS and Cooperation Vocational Rehabilitation. There was a presentation for about thirty people to give them an insight into the work at the airport and in its development. Isavia and Mace's experts reviewed their careers and discussed the decisions that led them to work for Isavia. It was useful to compare different career paths and how different decisions can lead parties into the same workplace. At the end of the session there was opportunity to ask questions and get advice from Isavia's experts on jobs, opportunities and careers.Isavia's sustainability policy emphasises systematic work with the local community, e.g. through the exchange of knowledge and experience. The visit is a part of what Isavia proposes in its operations to increase social value, e.g. through collaboration with institutions in the local community, promotion of jobs and Isavia as a workplace and the dissemination of knowledge generated within the company.

Jómfrúin.png

The one and only Jómfrú restaurant has opened at Keflavík Airport. Jómfrúin, a well known restaurant to many nationals, offers Danish spreads but also classic warm dishes, a selection of cakes and tarts and, of course, all kinds of drinks.

"We‘re very excited for the new times ahead for Jómfrúin. I have long been quite interested in setting up shop at the airport. In my opinion, a restaurant like Jómfrúin belongs in the Keflavík airport environment. For the past few years, I've been following the new airport focus and trends, both at Kastrup Airport and Gardermoen and I think it's a cool approach that people's experience of the city they visit can extend to an international airport. Keflavík Airport is the main gateway into Iceland, but the airport is also the gateway to the city of Reykjavík, where my place has proudly operated for almost 28 years. We at Jómfrúin are looking forward to offering the great triple to airport guests; The Danish spread, ale and schnapps," says Jakob E. Jakobsson, owner of the Jómfrúin.Classic spreads, such as egg & shrimp, the red snapper and the roast beef, will all be in place. A selection of beer on tap and draft beers will of course also be at hand to be enjoyed with the spread - or on its own. It is ideal to have a nice time at Jómfrúin before the flight, but for those who do not have time for that, it will also be possible to get ready-made slices of delicious spreads quickly and easily to enjoy later. The international company SSP is responsible for the operation of Jómfrúin at Keflavík Airport, but the company specializes in the operation of restaurants at airports and operates over 2,600 such places around the world."We at SSP are extremely happy for the opening of the Jómfrúin restaurant at the Keflavík Airport. In our opinion, it is a really good addition to the existing offers at the airport. We hope that passengers will take the opportunity to start their vacation even earlier than usually and enjoy what we have to offer, in a pleasant environment that many people already know, from Jómfrúin in the Reykjavík city center," says Jón Haukur Baldvinsson, SSP's manager in Iceland. The Jómfrúin restaurant has already been opened and is located next to the Eyesland optical store, where the Penninn/Eymundsson bookstore used to be.

In the last few weeks a diverse group of Isavia experts working on the major development plan of the airport visited students in Heiðarskóli elementary school.

Such visits aim to offer students inside information on what it is like working at Keflavík Airport and what jobs are needed in the future for its development. The sessions are meant to activate the students‘ creativity, challenge stereotypes and offer opportunities for open discussions.Near the end of May, teenage students in the 9th and 10th grade received a visit from Isavia where future jobs at the airport were introduced, and stereotypes on working at airports and in construction were challenged. Isavia‘s staff discussed the airport‘s major development plan, detailing how the airport will change and evolve over the next 25 years and what types of jobs will be created during that time. The students were encouraged to guess which job each of the guests had and then got the chance ask questions. In early June Isavia met with younger 4th grade students in a fun and creative session that addressed the airport community, its working environment and future developments. Isavia tasked the students with assisting its experts in designing an education center for the airport. It is safe to say that there was no shortage of ideas. Using reusable materials collected before the session, the students built their education centers, resulting in fun and original models that will undoubtedly inspire Isavia in its future developments. All groups had the same idea, to incorporate virtual reality into the education center so that children could test out different jobs. The session ended with a presentation on education centers at Manchester and Krakow airports and a discussion about what elements the students could be incorporated at Keflavik Airport.Isavia‘s sustainability policy emphasizes working with the community and increasing social value through sharing mutual knowledge and experiences. Visits such as this one are in an important part of this policy, and the students provide great inspiration to Isavia‘s staff as well. In light of the success of Heiðarskóli, Isavia is now looking at expanding this project.

A new arrival border for passengers coming to Iceland from countries outside the Schengen area has been opened, in a temporary and reusable extension.

The new border will facilitate and improve the handling of passengers entering the area in accordance with new European regulations. With the opening of the new border, passenger flow in the terminal will improve considerably, as efforts will be made to avoid long queues at border control and shorten waiting times with increased efficiency, e.g. with self-service machines. The building that was built for the new border will be used until a new and permanent facility for the Schengen external border can be established in a new connecting building that is currently being designed. In accordance with the emphasis on reuse during the development of Keflavík Airport, the building is designed in such a way that it can be taken down and used for other purposes when its role in border control ends. The building is on one floor and is located on the east side of the South Building.

Of course, you will be able to buy products such as contact lenses, as well as high-quality eye drops, which can come in handy when traveling. The store's focus is on service and the staff will do their best to help passengers choose glasses, lenses or anything else they need."Eyesland has always focused on excellent service and we will continue that in our new store at Keflavík Airport. We will have an optical measurement device on the field that is new to the market and has artificial intelligence that offers fast and accurate optical measurements. So passengers can get eye measurements on the spot in no time. In addition, we offer world-renowned brands such as Ray Ban, Valentino, Balmain, Max Mara, Dita Lancier and Oakley, for example. We look forward to welcoming passengers with quality products at a good price," says Sigrún Andersen, Eyesland's manager. The store is considered particularly successful, but it is the drawing studio Gláma Kím that has the credit for its design. The store is located next to the exit from the Duty Free store and therefore ideal for trying on some nice sunglasses or grab a pair of reading glasses on your way to a flight.
