Major improvements to the South Building

Construction on the expansion of the South Building has been completed and the 1,900 square meter extension has been put into use. The expansion of the South Building includes improved facilities for passengers at the departure gate on both floors at the eastern end of the South Building.
Construction began in January 2024, and with it the number of seats in the waiting area has been significantly increased, new departure gates have been put into use, in addition to expanding the catering and retail space.
By the mid-1990s, the capacity of the airport terminal had reached its limit and the increased need for expansion had become apparent. This increased need for expansion was partly due to Iceland's full membership of the Schengen cooperation, which required complete separation of passengers inside and outside the area. A new South Building, south of the old terminal, now commonly known as the North Building, was therefore put into use in 2001.
More than a decade later, however, it became clear that there was a need to expand the South Building, and this expansion has proven to be an important part of the development of Keflavík Airport after the large increase in passenger traffic through the airport since 2010, especially on flights to and from North America and the British Isles.
