A comprehensive renovation of the security screening area at KEF Airport is currently underway. The project has two main components: the introduction of the latest security screening equipment used at leading European airports, and the refurbishment of the screening hall itself, with a focus on creating a brighter and more open environment.

Passenger comfort and efficiency are the priorities in the security screening process, making it essential that the facilities are welcoming, well-lit, and clearly organised. As with all developments at the airport, the goal is to enhance the passenger experience, improve convenience, and ensure that KEF continues to meet the highest standards in both security and service.

All equipment in the security screening area will be replaced with new technology, including screening equipment, conveyor systems and supporting infrastructure.

The new technology will make the security screening process simpler and more convenient for passengers at KEF. One of the key benefits is that it makes it possible for passengers to leave electronic devices and liquids in their hand luggage during screening.

The equipment upgrade also addresses evolving security requirements. The new systems are of the latest generation and meet the C3 standard set by ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference), detecting explosives, weapons, and other dangerous materials with greater accuracy than the existing systems.

KEF has achieved some of the shortest security waiting times of any airport, and the new equipment will help sustain and build on this track record going forward.

The security screening area will be completely renovated with the aim of creating a brighter, more open and more comfortable environment for guests.

Modifications to the ceiling and walls will allow more natural light into the space, while the furnishings, flooring, and other facilities will be updated to give the hall a warmer, more modern feel and a more comfortable atmosphere overall.

The project will be carefully planned to minimize disruption to the airport's daily operations and passenger experience, with construction carried out in two phases during the quietest periods of the year.

The first phase, scheduled for the winter of 2026–2027, will focus on the refurbishment of the security screening hall and its facilities. The second phase will follow in the winter of 2027–2028, during which the existing equipment will be removed and new equipment installed in stages.

A key consideration in the planning process was developing a plan that keeps disruption to operations to a minimum. Equally important was the careful preparation of the tender for the security screening equipment, which is a technically complex procurement with a considerable lead time.

Average number of guests that go through our security screening for the last twelve months:

• June - August: 11.392 guests per day.
• September - November: 7.983 guests per day.
• December - February: 5.823 Guests per day.
• Mars - May: 7.044 Guests per day.

Security screening wait times vary depending on peak and off-peak travel periods. On average, however, waiting time at KEF‘s security screening is only three minutes.

• Tendering for equipment commenced in August. Results expected in the first half of 2027.
