A strong team of 249 summer employees have joined Isavia at Keflavík Airport (KEF). According to Brynjar Már Brynjólfsson, Isavia’s Director of Human Resources, this year’s summer hiring process went smoothly at one of Iceland’s most vibrant workplaces.Summer is now in full swing at Keflavík Airport, and the new staff have begun working on a range of engaging and varied tasks. With an estimated 5.6 million travellers expected to pass through the airport over the summer months, making it essential that these customer service positions are well staffed.

We received 1,091 applications for summer positions at Isavia this year, showing strong interest in working at Keflavík Airport. These jobs offer a great opportunity to gain valuable experience in an international environment and be part of a lively and welcoming workplace.

A total of 249 people were hired for summer jobs at the airport this year. "About 33.7% of those hired had worked for Isavia before, which means we have a strong group of both newcomers and experienced employees," Brynjar adds.

Isavia offers a wide variety of summer positions at the airport. The majority—150 people—were hired for roles in security screening and monitoring. Another 49 joined the passenger services team, which includes assisting travellers with reduced mobility. Additional roles include shuttle services, parking assistance, airport operations, and more.With a strong, enthusiastic team in place, Keflavík Airport is ready to welcome and serve the many travellers expected during the busy summer season.

An estimated 8.2 million guests are expected to travel through Keflavík Airport (KEF) in 2025, with 5.6 million of them passing through during the summer months. On average, 180 flights are scheduled to depart daily from the airport throughout the summer season. Travelers will be able to fly to 89 destinations, with 27 airlines offering direct flights from KEF.

<a href="https://www.kefairport.com/news/moderate-passenger-growth-2025-and-record-year-for-tourist-arrivals" target="_self">KEF's passenger forecast</a> anticipates traffic from April to October to be on par with last year. Of the 5.6 million guests expected over the summer, with 1.7 million being connecting passengers. Additionally, around 1.5 million foreign tourists and 400,000 Icelanders are expected to travel through the airport.

This summer, we expect to welcome 5.6 million guests, marking moderate growth compared to last year. Earlier this year, the new east wing was fully opened, adding four new boarding gates with direct access to aircraft. This improvement allows us to further enhance the passenger experience, especially during peak travel periods like the summer season.

A total of 11 new <a href="https://www.kefairport.com/destinations" target="_self">destinations</a> will be added this summer across various airlines. Icelandair is introducing two new routes, with direct flights to Nashville and Gothenburg. Play will add four destinations: Aalborg, Antalya, Faro, and Valencia.Additionally, Air Baltic will begin flights to Tallinn and easyJet to Basel. Two new airlines will also join KEF this summer: Discover Airlines from Munich and LOT Polish Airlines from Warsaw.

An average of 180 daily departures are expected from KEF this summer, with direct flights to 89 destinations offered by 27 airlines. Among the busiest routes will be Copenhagen and New York with six daily flights each, London with five, and Amsterdam, Boston, Paris, and Oslo with four daily flights.Total aircraft movements—arrivals and departures combined—are expected to reach nearly 38,000 during the summer, similar to last year but a significant increase from earlier years.

This summer, the Icelandic airlines have introduced new changes. Icelandair launched its first flight to Nashville in April and will operate the route four times a week throughout the summer. Gothenburg service will begin at the end of June with two weekly flights through August. In September, the airline will add a new direct route to Istanbul with four weekly flights. Overall, Icelandair will serve over 50 destinations this summer, including 19 in North America.Play will offer over 30 destinations this summer, including its four new additions: Aalborg (Denmark), Antalya (Turkey), Faro (Portugal), and Valencia (Spain).

International airlines are also expanding their presence at KEF with new direct routes. The airline easyJet began flying to Basel, Switzerland, in early April and will operate twice weekly through October. This adds to the five other destinations easyJet serves to and from KEF during the summer.WestJet has increased its capacity by 40% this summer and will operate daily flights during the peak season. This marks WestJet’s second summer of service between Calgary, Canada, and KEF.

Iceland remains a desirable destination

It’s encouraging to see international airlines show continued confidence in Iceland as a destination. For example, WestJet is continuing its direct flights from Calgary, which began last year, and both LOT and Discover Airlines are joining us this summer. This highlights Iceland's position as a highly sought-after travel destination.

The duty-free stores at Keflavík Airport will reopen under a new brand, ÍSLAND Duty Free, on May 7 as a new operator, Heinemann, takes over the retail operations.

As part of this transition, changes will be made to the duty-free stores in the arrival and departure halls, as well as the gate store. All locations will be temporarily closed for several hours while these changes are implemented. The closures will not affect the flow of passengers through the terminal.To ensure a smooth transition and make necessary adjustments to the retail areas, all duty-free stores will close temporarily from the evening of May 6 until the morning of May 7, according to the following schedule:<ul><li>Departure Hall Store: Closes May 6 at 20:00, reopens May 7 at 04:00</li><li>Arrival Hall Store: Closes May 6 at 23:00, reopens May 7 at 07:00</li><li>Gate Store: Closes May 6 at 20:00, reopens May 7 at 09:00</li></ul>During the closures, passengers who are unable to shop at ÍSLAND Duty Free will receive a 20% discount voucher, redeemable (for one year) during their next visit to the duty-free stores.

Isavia Group’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) for 2024 was a positive figure of ISK 10.7 billion. 

This compares to a positive operating result of ISK 8.1 billion for 2023. Revenue rose by some 15%, or ISK 6.9 billion, reaching ISK 51.9 billion. Over 8.3 million passengers used Keflavík International Airport last year. This compares to 7.8 million in 2023.The company’s total comprehensive income was ISK 5.2bn, compared with ISK 2.1bn in 2023. 2023 saw a positive exchange-rate effect on long-term loans of ISK 2.1 billion, as compared to ISK 180 billion in the previous year.

“In addition we had a relative higher number of transfer passengers than expected, a development that at the same time negatively impacted the airport’s income numbers. However, we welcome the increased number of transfer passengers because in the long-term they strengthen our position as a connection hub. The company’s performance and profitability was nevertheless good, although we need to continue to find ways to increase the profitability of the company’s operation in order to be able to finance future developments.”Last year was the biggest investment year since the establishment of the company, where investments amounted to ISK 18.0bn, of which 16.9bn were in Keflavík International Airport. We expect large-scale investment activities this year and in the coming years in relation to the airport’s development plan. A moderate increase in the number of passengers for 2025 is expected, or around 0.8%, mostly contributed to arriving passengers in Iceland. The company’s forecast estimates that 2025 will be <a href="https://www.kefairport.com/news/moderate-passenger-growth-2025-and-record-year-for-tourist-arrivals" target="_blank">a record year in the number of travellers</a> to Iceland.Isavia’s Annual General Meeting will be held on 26 March, when the company's annual report for 2024 will be published.

February was another busy month at Keflavík Airport, as the year continues to unfold with steady traffic through Iceland’s main gateway. According to KEF’s passenger forecast, nearly 8.4 million guests are expected to pass through the airport in 2025. A total of 477,833 guests traveled through the airport in February, marking a 2.8% decrease compared to February last year but remaining in line with projections. A total of 20 airlines operated flights to 65 destinations. The most popular destinations among guests were London, Copenhagen, Manchester, Paris, and Amsterdam. The busiest day of the month was February 23, when 22,395 guests made their way through the airport.

According to the Icelandic Tourist Board, around 42,091 Icelanders departed in February, representing a 12% increase compared to last year. Departures of foreign guests from KEF totaled 146,936, a 5.6% decrease from February last year. The majority of foreign departures were accounted for by British travelers (28% of the total), followed by American guests (19%), Chinese visitors (5%), Dutch travelers (4%), and French guests (4%).

New Rules for the Drop-off Lane at the Terminal.

On March 4, a change will be implemented regarding the use of the designated “drop-off lane” at the departure entrance of Keflavík Airport. This lane is intended for drivers who need to pull up briefly to drop off passengers or unload luggage. However, some vehicles have been parked there for extended periods, causing congestion and obstructing access for passengers and emergency services. The new measure aims to ensure quick and safe access for everyone dropping off passengers at the airport. To achieve this, a fee will be introduced for vehicles remaining in the drop-off lane for more than five minutes. In response to passenger needs, the free parking time at the P2 short-term parking area on the arrivals side of the terminal will be extended from 15 minutes to 30 minutes.

Each day, between 1,500 and 1,700 vehicles pass through the drop-off lane, with traffic peaking during busy airport hours. Delays and queues can quickly form if vehicles stop for too long or park in the lane. A study conducted over a one-month period showed that around 8% of vehicles remained in the drop-off lane for 16-20 minutes, disrupting traffic flow and leading to queues that inconvenience other airport visitors. To prevent this and improve circulation, a fee will be charged for vehicles staying longer than five minutes. The vast majority of drivers use the drop-off lane as intended, stopping only briefly. The median stopping time is approximately two and a half minutes, and around 80% of vehicles stay for five minutes or less. Based on this data, the decision was made to allow five minutes of free use in the drop-off lane before introducing a fee. This will help maintain smooth traffic flow and ensure convenient access for all airport visitors. The drop-off lane will remain free for those who use it as intended. Free for the First 5 Minutes

Drivers who need to stay longer than the designated drop-off time can use the short-term parking areas near the terminal: P1 on the departures side and P2 on the arrivals side. Previously, the first 15 minutes of parking at P1 and P2 were free of charge. To accommodate those who need extra time—such as those greeting or saying goodbye to friends and family—the free parking period at P2 has now been extended to 30 minutes.

Keflavík Airport (KEF) is set to introduce an exciting new play area designed for children, created by the Icelandic company Tulipop.

The project is a collaboration between Tulipop, the design team ÞYKJÓ, and IRMA design studio, with the goal of immersing young travellers in the enchanting world of Tulipop. The play area will be located in the airport’s new east wing and is scheduled to open this summer.

Tulipop is a well-known Icelandic brand, founded in 2010 by designer Signý Kolbeinsdóttir and CEO Helga Árnadóttir. The Tulipop universe is a vibrant, imaginative world filled with unique and lovable characters. The company’s biggest project to date is the production of a 52-episode animated series, Tulipop Tales, which has been broadcast internationally. The new play area at KEF aims to make the airport an even more enjoyable place for young travellers. Designed to spark creativity and imagination, the play space will encourage free play and exploration. Located in the new east wing of the airport, the play area will be situated at the end of the Aðalstræti dining area, just before entering the east terminal.

A Fun Space for Young Travelers 

“We are thrilled to be designing a play area for children at Keflavík Airport. Over the past 15 years, we have worked to create a magical visual world and stories for children, rooted in Icelandic creativity. It’s incredibly exciting to bring this world to KEF, in collaboration with ÞYKJÓ and IRMA, who are outstanding in their fields. We also look forward to introducing children from around the world to the magic of Tulipop,” says Helga Árnadóttir, CEO of Tulipop. In addition to the play area, an interactive iWall from Finnish company CSE Entertainment will be installed nearby. This engaging play feature allows children to step directly into an adventure, becoming part of the game—an exciting and active way to pass the time while traveling.

The most popular destinations were London, Copenhagen, New York, Manchester, and Paris.The busiest day of the month was on January 3, when 23,110 guests made their way through the airport.

Isavia, the operator of KEF, has accepted Gebr. Heinemann’s bid following a tender process. Gebr. 

Gebr. Heinemann will take over the concession for operating duty-free stores at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in the spring of 2025. Isavia, the operator of KEF, accepted Gebr. Heinemann's bid following a tender process. Three other companies also submitted bids for the Duty-Free store concession and facilities. Gebr. Heinemann's offer was chosen based on predetermined selection criteria. The Agreement for the concession between Gebr. Heinemann and Isavia has entered into effect.During the tender process, emphasis was placed on ensuring that passengers at Keflavik Airport feel they are in Iceland when passing through the duty-free stores at KEF. This is evident not only from the design of the shops, but also from the range of products on sale – 30 per cent of the assortment will consist of Icelandic products. Gebr. Heinemann will operate a departure shop (1,700 square metres), an arrival shop (2,280 square metres) and a gate shop.Gebr. Heinemann is a family-owned company based in Germany. A total of 28 airlines operated from KEF, serving 98 destinations. London was the most popular destination, while Copenhagen Airport had the highest number of flights.

Frequent volcanic eruptions at the Sundhnúkar Craters affected demand among international tourists traveling to Iceland. While KEF’s passenger forecast estimated 2.4 million foreign visitors, the actual number reached 2.3 million in 2024. Nevertheless, international passenger numbers grew by 2.1% compared to 2023. A total of 600,000 Icelanders travelled abroad last year, representing a 0.1% year-on-year increase.

Transit passengers, those using KEF as a connecting hub without staying in Iceland, totalled 2.58 million, representing 31.1% of the airport’s total visitors last year. This marks a significant increase from 21.2% in 2023 and highlights KEF's growing importance as a transit hub.

In total, 28 airlines operated flights to 98 destinations in 2024. London and Copenhagen remained the most popular destinations, continuing trends from previous years.London was particularly notable, with flights to four airports — Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton— operated by seven airlines: British Airways, easyJet, Icelandair, Jet2.com, Play, TUI, and Wizz Air.The airport with the most flights to and from KEF was Copenhagen Airport. Three airlines — Icelandair, Play, and SAS — provided year-round service between these two locations.

The single busiest day of 2024 was August 4th, when KEF welcomed 36,923 guests. Of these, 12,766 were transit passengers, representing 34.6% of the total. There were 224 passenger flights that day.

According to the <a href="http://ferdamalastofa.is/en" target="_self">Icelandic Tourist Board</a>, 2.26 million international travellers passed through KEF in 2024, an increase of 2.2% compared to the previous year. August recorded the highest number of international departures, with 281,450 travellers leaving Iceland.American travellers were the largest group of international visitors, accounting for 620,000 departures, or 27.4% of the total—a decline of 27,000 compared to 2023. British visitors were the second largest group, with 266,000 departures (11.8% of the total), a year-on-year decrease of 18,000.

Icelandic departures in 2024 totalled 605,579, similar to the 603,000 recorded in 2023. June was the busiest month for Icelanders traveling abroad, with 65,000 departures. This marks 2024 the fourth-largest year for Icelanders traveling internationally, following record years in 2017 (619,000), 2018 (668,000), and 2019 (611,000).

Additionally, the forecast anticipates a 3% increase in foreign tourist arrivals, reaching over 2.32 million—approximately 9,000 more than the record set in 2018.

We anticipate moderate growth, making 2025 the third largest year for passenger numbers at Keflavík Airport and a record year for foreign tourist arrivals. This reflects the airport's strong position as a hub and Iceland’s continued appeal as a destination despite recent challenges.

"This year, we will complete the opening the new east wing of the terminal, including four new gangways that provide direct access to aircraft. This milestone enhances the quality and service of the airport, strengthens our international competitiveness, and delivers a better experience for our guests and customers," says Guðmundur Daði furthermore.

The 2025 forecast predicts that 8.37 million passengers will travel through Keflavík Airport. Passenger volumes have only been higher in 2017, with 8.76 million passengers, and in 2018, with 9.80 million. The expected 0.8% year-on-year growth in 2025 is most notable in April, with a projected 16.7% increase, and in May, with a 7.1% rise.During the summer months, 26 airlines are scheduled to operate flights to 92 destinations, while in winter, 21 airlines will serve 70 destinations. Transit passengers, using KEF as a connecting hub without staying in Iceland, are expected to make up around 30% of the total passenger count, similar to 2024.

The passenger forecast also includes projections for foreign tourists arriving in Iceland via KEF and Icelanders traveling abroad.Over 2.32 million foreign tourists are expected to arrive in Iceland via Keflavík Airport in 2025, according to the forecast. This sets a new record, surpassing the previous peak in 2018 by nearly 9,000 tourists. In 2024, approximately 2.26 million foreign tourists arrived, marking a projected 3% year-on-year increase. The largest increases are expected in April (16.6%), May (10.8%), and June (6.1%).Travel by Icelanders abroad is also expected to grow by 1%, with an estimated 612,000 Icelandic citizens traveling internationally. This equates to an average of 1.6 trips per person over the course of the year.

The 2025 KEF Passenger Forecast is based on an analysis of factors influencing passenger demand for flights to and from the airport. The forecast relies on data about handling times secured by airlines, information from KEF Airport's systems, and updates on airline plans.Passenger numbers are categorized into three sections, including departing, arriving, and connecting passengers. Departing passengers are those departing from the airport after a stay in Iceland. Arriving passengers are those entering Iceland to stay, while connecting passengers use KEF as a transfer hub, changing to another flight without entering the country. Connecting passengers are counted both on arrival and departure.

Isavia and 22 partner organizations were recently awarded an European Union grant of ISK 3.5 billion for the LIFE ICEWATER project, which aims to accelerate and improve the implementation of Iceland's water management plan.

The <a href="https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/life/publicWebsite/project/LIFE23-IPE-IS-LIFE-ICEWATER-101147387/for-the-future-of-water-implementation-of-river-basin-management-plan-in-iceland" target="_blank">LIFE ICEWATER project</a> has the following objectives:<ul><li>Increase knowledge about the use, properties, and condition of water in Iceland.</li><li>Ensure seamless and coordinated administration of water management issues.</li><li>Improve water quality, for example, through upgrades to sewage systems and the purification of wastewater.</li><li>Educate the public and stakeholders on the importance of water.</li></ul>The European Union’s grant for LIFE ICEWATER in Iceland is one of the largest ever received by the country. The total scope of the projects assembled by the collaborative group amounts to ISK 5.8 billion.The EU's LIFE program is funding 60% of the project, which will be carried out from 2025 to 2030.

LOT Polish Airlines will launch flights between Warsaw and Keflavík Airport starting April 12, 2025. 

This marks the first time that the airline, which is Poland's national carrier, flies to Iceland. The airline plans to fly to Iceland the whole year round. LOT will operate four weekly flights to KEF during the summer and three weekly flights during the winter. Flights will be operated with LOT's Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, departing Warsaw in the evening and returning from KEF on overnight flights.
