2024: A Landmark Year for Food Enthusiasts at KEF

The year 2024 was transformative for food lovers at Keflavík Airport (KEF). As the airport continues to evolve, significant emphasis was placed on enhancing passenger services and expanding the culinary offerings within the terminal. This year saw the opening of several new restaurants in partnership with esteemed collaborators, all united by their commitment to featuring carefully selected Icelandic ingredients in their dishes.

Aðalstræti Dining Area: A Celebration for food lovers
The Aðalstræti dining area debuted this fall in KEF’s departure hall, earning rave reviews from travellers and food lovers alike. This vibrant space is home to three new restaurants: the popular burger spot Yuzu, the Italian-inspired La Trattoria, and the Mexican eatery Zócalo.
Part of the new east wing expansion—adding nearly 30% more space to the terminal—Aðalstræti was designed by the Icelandic design firm HAF Studio. The area reflects the charm of Reykjavik’s city centre, creating a welcoming atmosphere that blends modernity with local tradition.
With this addition, Keflavík Airport now boasts an even broader range of dining options, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every palate.

Yuzu: Iceland’s Favourite Burger Destination
Yuzu, a beloved name in Iceland’s food scene, has expanded to six locations with its latest opening at KEF. The menu, crafted by renowned chef Haukur Már Hauksson, features a wide variety of gourmet burgers.
Travelers at KEF can enjoy Yuzu’s signature offerings as well as an exclusive breakfast burger, thoughtfully created to cater to early-morning flyers.

La Trattoria: Italian Simplicity and Excellence
La Trattoria brings the flavours of Italy to KEF, focusing on simplicity, quality ingredients, and authenticity. Drawing inspiration from Italian culinary traditions, the restaurant has become a favourite among food enthusiasts since its initial opening at Hafnartorg.
The menu is the brainchild of accomplished chefs Hrefna Sætran and Ágúst Reynisson, who have crafted dishes that celebrate the essence of Italian cuisine.

Zócalo: Fresh Mexican Fare with an Icelandic Twist
Zócalo introduces Iceland to fresh and healthy Mexican cuisine. The restaurant is connected to Icelandic culinary heritage through its owner, Einar Örn Einarsson, co-founder of the popular Serrano chain. This KEF location marks Zócalo’s first in Iceland.
The menu offers a variety of delicious options, including high-quality burritos, burrito bowls, quesadillas, tacos, nachos, and salads, all designed to excite the taste buds.

Loksins Café & Bar: A Welcoming Return
After years of success at KEF, Loksins Bar has returned with a refreshed identity as Loksins Café & Bar. In addition to a wide selection of beverages, the revamped venue now features an elevated food menu.
Diners can enjoy handcrafted pastries made fresh on-site, breakfast bowls, salads, ciabatta sandwiches, and other hot dishes.
The menu is overseen by Chef Semjon Karopka, who brings his extensive culinary expertise from roles at Pasta in Borg 29 Food Hall and Hipstur in Gróðurhúsið, Hveragerði.

KEF Diner: A Nostalgic Touch at the D-Gates
The KEF Diner, set to open near the D-Gates by year’s end, draws inspiration from the area’s historical connection to the American military presence in Keflavík from 1951 to 2006.
The diner’s menu blends classic American dishes with Icelandic flavours, offering travellers a unique dining experience that reflects the region’s rich cultural history.

2024 Builds on 2023’s Success
This year has been a continuation of the exciting culinary developments seen in 2023. Notable openings last year included the iconic Jómfrúin, as well as Bakað, Eldað, and Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur.
As Keflavík Airport continues to grow, its diverse and high-quality dining options solidify its place as a hub for food enthusiasts from around the world.
