Raising the Flag for the Sustainable Development Goals

September 25 marks Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Flag Day, a global initiative to raise awareness of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On this occasion, the SDG flag is flown at Keflavík Airport (KEF) to highlight our commitment to the 17 Global Goals and to encourage greater action toward building a better future for all.

The UN Global Compact and the United Nations Association of Iceland jointly organize SDG Flag Day in Iceland. This year marks the third time the initiative has been celebrated in the country.

Ten years have passed since the adoption of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet. By raising the SDG flag at KEF, we reaffirm our support for these goals and emphasize the importance of collective action. Working together, we can accelerate progress and help shape a more sustainable and inclusive world.

Sustainability at the Core of Our Operations

Keflavík Airport has been a proud participant in the UN Global Compact since 2017. Through this commitment, we align our operations with the Compact’s ten universal principles on human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. We also actively integrate the SDGs into our strategy, with particular focus on:

  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
  • Goal 13: Climate Action
  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals

The Purpose of SDG Flag Day

SDG Flag Day serves as a reminder that every action counts. By flying the SDG flag, businesses, schools, and institutions alike demonstrate their commitment to being part of the solution. The flag is not just a symbol of solidarity, as it sparks dialogue, inspires innovation, and strengthens the collective journey toward achieving the 2030 Agenda.

About the Initiative

Since its launch in 2019, SDG Flag Day has rapidly gained momentum around the world. Each year, more organizations and communities join in by raising the flag and reaffirming their support for sustainable development. In Iceland, the initiative is organized for the third time by the UN Global Compact and the United Nations Association of Iceland.
