Loanwords in Icelandic displayed at the airport

Icelandic loanwords are showcased throughout Keflavík Airport (KEF) in celebration of the Icelandic Language Day. At Keflavík Airport, emphasis is placed on promoting Icelandic and making it an integral part of the guest experience. This is achieved, among other ways, by showcasing the diversity of the Icelandic language.
"Chaos" and "Shampoo" at the airport
Some of the loanwords are now displayed in the terminal, and have become well-established in the Icelandic language, offering intriguing examples of how the language evolves and adapts to new developments in society. For instance, the word ringulreið ("chaos") originates from the German Ringelrei, and sjampó ("shampoo") comes from the Hindi word champo, meaning "head massage."
By spotlighting Icelandic loanwords, guests are introduced to the unique characteristics of the Icelandic language, while Icelandic-speaking guests have an opportunity to learn more about their native language.
Loanwords highlight the strength of the Icelandic language in absorbing and adapting to influences from various sources. At Keflavík Airport, where guests from around the world are welcomed, it is delightful to present Icelandic in this way.

Deliberate Efforts to Prioritize Icelandic
Significant efforts have been made to bring Icelandic to the forefront at KEF, including on wayfinding signs and informational boards. The goal is for all KEF guests to rely on these signs to navigate the airport efficiently while enjoying a positive Icelandic experience.
This initiative spans an 80,000 square meter area within the airport, requiring substantial planning. Currently, new signage is being tested, taking into account the needs of children, non-Icelandic speakers, and individuals with visual impairments.
Testing the signage is a large-scale project requiring extensive preparation due to the scope and number of factors involved. The wayfinding signs play a crucial role in guiding guests and ensuring smooth traffic flow throughout the airport.
